Week V
Check-up
Because of the relaxed Flourish posted last week, there's not much to check - up on. But if anyone has anything, feel free to post it in the comment section
Admonish
Washington D.C. is one of the most diverse cities in our country. Just take a walk down the the National Mall and you will find a melting pot of humanity. Families picnicking in the shade. School children visiting museums. Foreigners from nearly every country taking in the sights. Talented men playing various instruments on the sidewalk. Homeless men begging for spare change. Diplomats rushing by them in their tailored suits. You can't help but notice people from every spectrum of life.
Somewhere near the Washington Monument, you will find a station for D.C.'s underground train system, the Metro. Follow me down the escalator.
We have enjoyed a nice afternoon of sight seeing and are ready to rest our feet. As we reach the first level, in the middle of all the busyness you hear children screaming wildly. As you follow the sound, your attention is drawn to a young mother with two rowdy, undisciplined children. Judging from her appearance, you gather that the mother must be rather well-off. She is nervously rummaging through her purse trying to find her Metro ticket. She has apparently misplaced it and becomes frantic. The stress from the situation is showing all over her face. Her children's screams become ear piercing causing everyone in the station to stare at them. She struggles to pacify them with candy, but to no avail.
What do you begin thinking? What do you do?
We make our way down to the lower level and board our train. It's not long before we reach our stop. As we exit the train and head out of the station, you are startled by a situation. As if oblivious to the hundreds of people around him, a man is rummaging through a garbage can next to a bench. He is wearing a very worn jacket and pair of frayed blue jeans. His face is barely visible through his hair and beard. He pulls various items out of the garbage and places them in the pockets of his jacket. You notice his attention is suddenly drawn to a bag on the bench next to a well dressed businessman. As the businessman becomes distracted with a phone call, the homeless man slowly slips his hand into the bag and pulls something out, places it in his pocket and walks away.
What do you begin thinking? What do you do?
Your reaction to both of these situations is motivated by your spiritual gift. There are many different responses to both of them, but the one that you choose is a direct reflection of the gift God has placed in your responsibility.
Exercise
Mentally answer the questions for both situations above, then take the spiritual gifts inventory found at this link: http://mintools.com/spiritual-gifts-test.htm. (If you do not see the test, scroll down the page until you find it. It is near the bottom.) After you have taken the test, let us know what you find and how you believe your spiritual gift affected your reaction to both situations.
Scripture
After you have found your spiritual gift, find scripture dealing with your particular gift. When you find it, let us know what it is in the comment section.
Be sure to let us know what you find after you take the test, as well as what scripture you find that deals with your spiritual gift.

sbcjr wrote 1027 Days Ago (neutral) 0In both of these situations, I would probably notice everyone's faults, think bad thoughts about them all, and not do anything helpful.
Not the right response, but I'm being honest (as a Prophet). I guess I could answer "How should my gift affect my response..."2 pointsAmy wrote 1032 Days Ago (neutral) 0A few years ago I took one of these and it said I was a teacher....my husband says my spiritual gift is serving though. This quiz said giving, so *sigh*, I don't know.
In the situation with the stressed out mom I would hand her my metro ticket. The other question was tough....I would tell Waylon and let him handle it! :)3 pointsWes_Guynn wrote 1033 Days Ago (neutral) 0Thanks for all the amazing input everyone. This is great! Keep it coming!3 pointsWes_Guynn wrote 1033 Days Ago (neutral) 0Antepenultimate1 - "My reaction would be very similar. :) Except that I tend to misuse my gift, and would probably think the homeless man deserved to go to jail for stealing from someone."
I wonder how many of us misuse our gift. What are your thoughts, everyone!4 pointsAnna wrote 1033 Days Ago (neutral) 0The test was different than others I've done before, but it was helpful. I came up with Server - Prophet on this one, which was strange to me at first since I'm definitely a prophet, with giver being a strong second. After I thought about it though, it made more sense. The prophet is motivated to help/serve others because it is right.
Great post, Wes! I really enjoy your practical illustrations!4 pointsJan wrote 1034 Days Ago (neutral) 0As for the first situaton, I think that I would go and offer my assistance to the lady. I would have introduced myself to her and if she was open to converstation I would ask her if she minded if I helped. I would try to redirect her children's attention toward obeying thier mother in a fun way. I would aslo give her a track and invite her too come to church...
The second situaton.....if I had food I would offer it to the man with a track.....and explain to him that I saw him steal from the man. My husband believes that we need to be careful in this area....because the bible says that if a man does not work he should not eat.....
I would not however offer the man money.4 pointsMrs_Corbett wrote 1034 Days Ago (neutral) 0I might try to help. It would depend on a lot of factors. I would definitely teach my children lessons from both situations. From the first situation I would teach my children how to train their own children. From the second I would talk to my children about the consequences for choices we make.4 pointssbcjr wrote 1034 Days Ago (neutral) 0I want to hear how you all feel your reactions in those situations would be affected by your spiritual gift! And yes, I'll post my answer too... :)3 pointsMrs_Corbett wrote 1034 Days Ago (neutral) 0That was fun. I came up with slightly different results than previously. This one calls me a teacher with a strong second in exhortation and leadership. I can understand. I get the gist of it. Helpful.3 pointsWes_Guynn wrote 1035 Days Ago (neutral) 0I am having trouble uploading the wallpaper for the week. I will have the problem fixed as soon as possible. Also, the link for the spiritual gift test is broken. You will have to copy and paste it to your browser for now. Thank you for your patience.3 points
